Enter The Mushroom Kingdom

On the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. (1985), Nintendo teamed up with the LEGO Group to create a new LEGO theme. The aim was to combine the video game with LEGO’s traditional sets, capturing the originality of both.

The sets allow fans to recreate the various 2D Super Mario levels: Bowser’s Castle, the Haunted Yard, and other locations in the Mushroom Kingdom. These locations are populated by various recognisable Super Mario allies (such as Luigi and Yoshi), enemies (such as Goombas, ghosts, and man-eating plants), blocks, power-ups, pipes, flag poles, and coins.

At the centre of these sets is the interactive Mario, a large figurine that uses electronic parts (having LCD displays for the eyes, mouth, and chest). A scanner at the base of Mario allows him to respond dynamically to where he is placed — losing lives when coming into contact with hazardous obstacles, changing facial expressions on the fly, and producing authentic sound effects.

Additionally, the Mario figurine can connect to the official app via Bluetooth, which allows the firmware to be updated. This same app provides various bonuses, including challenges, a camera, and a digital instruction booklet.
